680News wine reviews – November 22–24, 2013

Moulin de Gassac Merlot 2011
Mas de Domas Gassac produces some of the best wines in the Languedoc. Their second label, which is much more affordable than their top wines, is Moulin de Gassac. Currently at the LCBO is Moulin de Gassac Merlot 2011. The wine is dense purple in colour with an earthy blueberry nose. Medium-bodied and richly extracted, it's dry and spicy with a swarm finish. It costs $13.95 a bottle at the LCBO. Match it with red meat dishes or strong cheeses. That's Moulin de Gassac Merlot 2011 from France. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($13.95, LCBO #340950)

Quinta do Encontro Bairrada 2010
Portugal's Bairrada region on the Atlantic coast produces some powerful red wines. Quinta do Encontro has bended the indigenous variety Baga grape with Merlot for their 2010 offering currently at the LCBO. For $13.95 you get sturdy wine that's dense purple in colour with a toasty, spicy nose of blackberries and a floral grace note. Those flavours are replicated satisfyingly on the palate. Serve it with hearty winter casseroles. That's Quinta Do Encontro Bairrada 2010 from Portugal. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($13.75, LCBO #320085)
