 WINES OF THE WEEK

More Wines of the Week

  • Joseph Cattin Gewurztraminer 2011
  • Château Capbern Gasqueton 2009
  • Sperling Vineyards Old Vines Riesling 2011

Three wines that I scored over 90 points from Vintages December 7th release:

Joseph Cattin Gewurztraminer 2011 (Alsace)
$17.95 (Vintages #224626)
Quintessential Alsace Gewurz at a great price. Golden straw colour; intensely perfumed, rose petal, cardamom, jasmine nose; full-bodied, off-dry, lovely mouth feel with the flavour of Turkish Delight. ***** (92)
Food match: Munster cheese; Thai dishes

Château Capbern Gasqueton 2009 (St. Estephe, Bordeaux)
$33.85 (Vintages #192906)
Plumper than you usually find in St. Estephe, a terrific claret. Dense purple-ruby colour; cedar, vanilla oak, blackcurrant with a floral top note; dull-bodied, beautifully structured with ripe fruit and forward tannins. Needs 3–5 years. ***** (91)
Food match: rack of lamb; roast quail

Sperling Vineyards Old Vines Riesling 2011 (Okanagan Valley)
$34.95 (Vintages #361204)
Along with Tantalus this is the best Riesling to come out of BC. Medium straw colour with a floral nose of honey and petrol; medium-bodied with off-dry flavours of tangerine and honey and a crabapple finish. A sterling effort from Ann Sperling. ***** (91)
Food match: roast pork; blue cheese
