680News wine reviews – February 28–March 2, 2014

Heitlinger Mellow Silk Pinot Noir 2011
The German region of Baden is not the most likely place I'd go looking for top flight Pinot Noir but I was surprised by the quality and the price of Heitlinger Mellow Silk Pinot Noir 2011. Ruby coloured with a nose of raspberries, sun-dried tomatoes, rust and a mineral note, this beautifully balanced wine is dry and elegant with a silky mouth feel. And a steal at $16.95 in Vintages outlets. Match it with pork loin or grilled salmon. That's Heitlinger Mellow Silk Pinot Noir 2011 from Germany. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($16.95, Vintages #344697)

Wayne Gretzky Estates No. 99 Riesling 2012
Celebrity wines usually don't measure up to the achievements of the name in question. But Wayne Gretzky Estates No. 99 Riesling 2012 is an exception. Pale straw in colour with a hint of lime, it offers a nose of citrus fruits and minerals with a light floral note. It's fresh and zesty on the palate with flavours of honey, lime and grapefruit zest. And bargain-priced at $13.95. It's the kind of wine that goes well with seafood or fish dishes. That's Wayne Gretzky Estates No. 99 Riesling 2012 from Ontario. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($13.95, LCBO #144865)
