Hugh Hamilton "The Rascal" Shiraz 2000 (McLaren Vale, South
$22.50 ($270 a case of 12 from Classique Imports, 416-782-0108; email: firstname.lastname@example.org)
Thus spake the back label: "Shiraz vines flourish so well in McLaren Vale
they are almost cheeky, hence the name 'The Rascal'." Hamilton goes on
to confess that his father called him that too.
Another distinguished Shiraz from Oz. Deep purple ruby colour; minty, blackberry
and cedary on the nose; full-bodied soft fruit with an engaging sweetness at
the core; chocolate and blackberry flavours, well structured and firm. ****
Food match: game, pepper steak
Hillebrand Trius Chardonnay 2001 (Niagara Peninsula, Ontario)
$16.95 (from the winery, 905-468-7123, or through www.winerytohome.com)
Hillebrand made a wonderful Chardonnay in this controversial vintage. Medium
straw colour with a nose of vanilla, apple and almond; richly textured, buttery,
toffee flavours; full-bodied with good length and dry finish. ****
Food match: garlic chicken, lobster salad
Stoney Ridge Barrel-Fermented Gewürztraminer Icewine 1999 (Niagara
$59.95 (375 mL) (Available at the winery, 905-562-1324, or through www.winerytohome.com)
An unusual Icewine unlike any I have tasted.
Old gold colour; an intense bouquet of rose water, lychee and Turkish Delight.
The taste is elegant, exotic, rose water, sweet tropical fruit and honey; medium-bodied,
beautifully balanced with refreshing acidity. Great quality. Amazing length.
Food match: drink by itself
