  • Rosabrook Cabernets Estate Reserve 2001

Cave Spring Chenin Blanc 2002 (Ontario)
$15.95 (at the winery or through www.winerytohome.com)
This is the first release of Cave Spring's Chenin Blanc and it augurs well for the future of this variety in Ontario. Pale straw, bright and shining colour; a nose of pear and quince; ripe fruit flavour, medium-bodied, clean and elegant, touch of residual sweetness, firm structure, good length, finishes with a hint of spice and white pepper. A fine first effort. ***˝
Food match: grilled trout, crab salad

Fortant de France Syrah 2002 (Languedoc-Roussillon)
$9.45 (General list)
This is the best under-$10 Syrah that I have tasted. Dense purple ruby in colour with a smoky, earthy, blackberry nose. Less dark on the palate than the nose suggests, with a brambleberry and leather flavour. Medium-bodied, soft tannins. Good value. ***˝
Food match: cassoulet, BBQ ribs

Rosabrook Cabernets Estate Reserve 2001 (Margaret River, W. Australia)
$45 (Vintages Classics Catalogue Spring/Summer 2003 or Prevedello and Mathews 416-979-9153)
A full-blooded Bordeaux-style blend (50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cabernet Franc, 14% Merlot) in New World style. Purple ruby colour with a concentrated nose of blackcurrant, spice and mint; well balanced and elegant, firmly structured with blackcurrant, blueberry and chocolate flavours with an engaging floral top note. Good length. *****
Food match: rack of lamb, duck breast
