680News wine reviews – July 18–20, 2014

Pipoli Aglianico del Vulture 2010
We don't see many wines from the Italian region of Basilicata – think the instep of the Italian boot – but this one currently at Vintages is a great bargain. Pipoli Aglianico del Vulture 2010 punches above its weight for its $15.95 price at Vintages. Dense purple, it has a nose of cherries and leather and dried herbs. The herb-tinged fruit is sweet and the wine is easy drinking. Serve it with red meat dishes. That's Pipoli Aglianico del Vulture 2010 from Italy. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($15.95, Vintages #320507)

Featherstone Gewurztraminer 2013
Gewurztraminer is a grape that Ontario should do well but there are surprisingly few good examples on the market. If you love Gewurz's complex flavours then try Featherstone Gewurztraminer 2013 from Niagara. Pale straw in colour, this medium-bodied wine has the characteristic rose petal and lychee nose. The fruit is nicely concentrated with a gingery, sweet grapefruit note to complement its floral-lychee flavour. It costs $19.95 at Vintages outlets. Try it with smoked salmon or Chinese food. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($19.95, Vintages #64592)
