680News wine reviews – August 8–10, 2014

Konzelmann Reserve Merlot 2012
The 2012 vintage was one of the best for Ontario red wines. A good example of the richness of the wines is Konzelmann Reserve Merlot 2012, currently at Vintages outlets. The wine is dense purple in colour with a nose of spic blueberry and black fruits overlaid with vanilla oak notes. There's a lovely floral note in the richly extracted blueberry, sweet plum and chocolate flavours. It costs $26.95 at Vintages. A wine for steak or lamb. That's Konzelmann Reserve Merlot 2012 from Ontario. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($26.95, Vintages #299214)

Nugan Alfredo Second Pass Shiraz 2012
Today's recommendation is a bargain-priced Shiraz from Australia. Nugan Alfredo Second Pass Shiraz 2012 from New South Wales is dense purple in colour with a savoury, herbal, blackberry nose. The fruit has a spicy, sweet and savoury flavour backed by lively acidity and a smoky note on the finish. It costs $15.95 at the LCBO and is a true BBQ wine, especially for marinated ribs. That's Nugan Alfredo Second Pass Shiraz 2012 from Australia. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($15.95, LCBO #368811)
