Pedras do Monte Castelão 2000 (Terras do Sado, Portugal)
$8.95
This 100% Castelão (the grape also known as Periquita) produces a Syrah-like wine south east of Lisbon. Deeply coloured with an earthy, blackberry and iodine nose, it shows ripe fruit on the palate with a full-body and soft enveloping tannins. Good value. ***½
Food match: BBQ ribs, Manchego cheese

Beaulieu Vineyard Coastal Cabernet Sauvignon 2000 (California)
$17.95
An affordable Cab from California! Dense ruby colour, cedar and blackcurrant nose; medium-bodied with sweet blackcurrant fruit, firmly structured with a tannic lift on the finish. ***½+
Food match: lamb chops, grilled quail

Beaulieu Vineyard Coastal Sauvignon Blanc 2001 (California)
$15.95
I'm not a great fan of Californian Sauvignon, but this one has good varietal character and an affordable price. Medium straw colour, minerally green plum nose; well-defined grassy, green plum flavours, lively acidity with good length. ****
Food match: Trout in almonds, grilled goat’s cheese
