Cusumano Syrah 2013 (Sicily)
$11.95 (LCBO #145490)
This wine is deep ruby in colour, and the nose has that characteristic Syrah bouquet of black cherries, white pepper and tar with a light florality. It's dry, full-bodied with cherry and licorice flavours finishing on a savoury, herbal note. **** (87)
Food match: steak tartar; aged cheddar

Maipe Reserve Malbec 2012 (Mendoza Valley)
($14.95, Vintages #247320)
Argentinian Malbec is all the rage it seems. I counted 107 Argentinian Malbecs or Malbec blends at the LCBO. This deep ruby-coloured wine has a spicy plum and blackberry nose. It's full-bodied, dry with black fruit and dark chocolate flavours with a lively spine of acidity. ****½ (89)
Food match: beef; blue cheese

Bischöfliche Weingüter Trier Dom Riesling Kabinett 2011 (Mosel)
$18.95 (Vintages #378828)
The wines I enjoy most without food are German Rieslings of Kabinett or Spätlese quality. This Riesling has a minerally, floral, grapefruit nose with an off-dry flavour of peach and citrus fruits. It's beautifully balances and fairly dances on the palate with a faint spritz. ***** (90)
Food match: pork; onion tart
