680News wine reviews – September 26–28, 2014

Cusumano Syrah 2013
Sicily offers some of the high- quality wines at wallet-friendly prices. Currently at the LCBO is Cusumano Syrah 2013 at a very affordable $11.95 a bottle. Deep ruby in colour, the nose has that characteristic Syrah bouquet of black cherries, white pepper and tar with a light florality. It's dry, full-bodied with cherry and licorice flavours finishing on a savoury, herbal note. Perfect for BBQ-ed meats. That's Cusumano Syrah 2013 from Sicily. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($11.95, LCBO #145490)

Maipe Reserve Malbec 2012
Argentinian Malbec is all the rage it seems. I counted 107 Argentinian Malbecs or Malbec blends at the LCBO. One of the best values, currently at Vintages outlets, is Maipe Reserve Malbec 2012. This deep ruby-coloured wine has a spicy plum and blackberry nose. It's full-bodied, dry with black fruit and dark chocolate flavours and a lively spine of acidity. A true steak wine. It costs $14.95 at Vintages outlets. That's Maipe Reserve Malbec 2012 from Argentina. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($14.95, Vintages #247320)
