680News wine reviews – October 10–12, 2014

Stobi Vranac 2010
We don't see many Macedonian wines coming through the LCBO system but here's one that's worth its $13.95 price tag: Stobi Vranac 2010. The Vranac grape is genetically related to Zinfandel and Primitivo. The wine is dense purple-black with a smoky, toasty, blackberry nose. The fruit is richly extracted giving it a fullness on the palate with a ripe plum flavour. Good for spicy meat dishes. That's Stobi Vranac 2010 from Macedonia at Vintages outlets. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($13.95, Vintages #317297)

Laroche Viognier de la Chevalière 2013
The Pays d'Oc in the southern part of France labels its wines by the grape variety rather than the village name. And the wines from here are usually good value. Laroche Viognier de la Chevalière 2013 has true varietal character: lemon yellow in colour, it offers a minerally, peach nose with a floral top note; mouth-filling, peach and apricot flavours fill the mouth with a spicy finish. Good value at $12.70 a bottle. Serve it with chicken or veal in a cream sauce. That's Laroche Viognier de la Chevalière 2013 from France. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News and 680News.com. ($12.70, LCBO #377622)
