Top Picks from Vintages' August Releases
Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Chardonnay 2001 (Napa Valley)
This is one of the best California Chardonnays I have tasted in some time.
Yellow straw in colour, it has a nose of caramel and butter. The wine
fills the mouth with rich, mature, toasty butterscotch flavours and lingers
long to a nutty finish. *****
Royal Tokaji Wine Company Tokaji Aszu 5 Puttonyos 1996 "Red Label"
$28.95 (500 mL)
Bronze colour; marmalade and toffee on the nose; the sweetness is countered
on the palate with tea leaf and orange flavours with lively acidity and
great length. Will improve with more bottle age.*****
Lindemans "Pyrus" Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot/Cabernet Franc
Dense purple colour with a concentrated vanilla and blackcurrant nose;
firm and full-bodied structure yet remarkably elegant and finely tuned;
fruit driven but very stylish. *****
Ca' del Solo/Bonny Doon Big House Red 2001 (California)
A bargain at the price. A blend of 13 varieties (!) in homage to Chateauneuf-du-Pape.
Deep purple colour; concentrated blackberry, smoke and oak on the nose;
the Syrah sings through with a blackberry and medicinal note; well balanced
with a black cherry and blackberry fruitiness. ****½
