"The Taste of Newfoundland"

Wed, July 29–Sun, Aug 2, 2015
(also George Street Music Festival weekend)

The vibrant culture of Newfoundland is unlike that of any other place in Canada. This four night, five-day tour showcases the unique food, culture, and fun this part of our country has to offer. "The Rock" is Canada's youngest province; St. John's the oldest city in North America, and home to the friendliest people you'll meet!

St. John's is recognized as Canada's "go to" food destination by chefs andThe Globe and Mail and is home to two of the top 10 restaurants in Canada, awarded by EnRoute Magazine. We'll have exceptional meals with a Newfoundland focus at the top restaurants in St. John's paired with wines and you'll experience the amazing food being created by these chefs. Our dinners are planned to include three award-winning restaurants: Blue on Water, Mallard Cottage, and Raymonds.

This is a well-balanced itinerary with blend of guided activities as well as free time to relax and explore on your own. The customized nature of this trip means that when you come on the "Taste of Newfoundland" you can be sure you will have a unique experience and great stories to share. The tour price, based on two people sharing a room, is $2,100 CAD per person, plus HST; a room for one person is $2500.00 plus HST. This is a land-only price; airfare is extra, and we can work with you on flights.

Planned Itinerary*

Day 1 – Wednesday: Arrive in St. John's. Check in to your room at the Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland, overlooking Signal Hill and St. John's Harbour. This Four+ Star hotel will be our hotel for the entire trip. We'll have our welcome dinner this evening and get to know our group members.

Day 2 – Thursday: Breakfast and then a walk to The Rooms for a 10:00 am arrival. The Rooms is the stunning provincial cultural institution overlooking St. John's and showcasing the history, art and culture of Newfoundland and Labrador. It can be seen in the top of the photo on page one. Our visit here is a great introduction to this special part of Canada.

We'll then make our way to Bay Bulls for lunch and trip with Gatherall's Puffin and Whale Watch to the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve. Gatherall's has been doing these trips for over 30 years, and their modern catamaran is our choice for this exciting tour.

We'll then return to St. John's for some relaxation and our second organized dinner.

Day 3 – Friday: An early rise takes us to Cape Spear and, weather permitting, the first sunrise over North America! Cape Spear is the most easterly point on the continent. We'll visit and be among the first to greet the day.

We'll head back to St. John's for breakfast, followed by a guided tour in and around St. John's. We'll visit Quidi Vidi Village, Signal Hill and Cabot Tower (the place where Marconi received the first Transatlantic wireless message in 1901) and other great spots.

Free time for lunch. We'll then meet at the award-winning Newfoundland Chocolate Company for an afternoon of chocolate making and tasting.

Tonight it is your free evening to explore St. John's. We can make recommendations for excellent spots for dinner. This evening is also the chance to explore the fun and legendary music scene in the pubs around George Street.

Day 4 – Saturday: This morning we'll head downtown and do a walking tour, stopping at art galleries showcasing local artists such as Jean-Claude Roy, whose work has earned praise around the world.

Free time for lunch and a free afternoon. Perhaps a round of golf at Bally Haly, overlooking the Harbour Narrows, or a quick drive up the coast to Middle Cove – a breathtaking spot on the Atlantic and a favourite of locals. We can help with special ideas for your free time if you want.

Early this evening, we'll meet for a drink, some local music and your "Screeching In." You can't leave St. John's without becoming an honorary Newfoundlander. We'll then head off to our final exceptional dinner.

Day 5 – Sunday: This is a leisurely morning, with breakfast and checkout before heading to the airport. Depending on your flight time, it is also the chance to take a walk and finish off some last minute shopping.

*The actual schedule may change depending on weather. With some activities like whale watching being outdoors, we may move things around to try and have the best days for these activities.

  • Hotel for 4 nights
  • 3 food-and-wine-paired dinners at award-winning St. John's restaurants
  • Breakfast for 4 days
  • Lunch on Day 2
