680News wine reviews – June 26–28, 2015

Konzelmann Shiraz 2013
You wouldn't expect to find Shiraz in Ontario but the Konzelmann winery in Niagara makes a delicious version – more in Northern Rhone style than Australia's Barossa Valley. Konzelmann Shiraz 2013 is a deep ruby colour with that characteristic herb-tinged, peppery, blackberry nose. The wine is medium-bodied with sweet fruit and a soft mid-palate that finishes dry. Great value at $13.80 from the LCBO's general list. Try it with roast lamb or barbecued hamburger. That's Konzelmann Shiraz 2013 from Ontario. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News. ($13.80, LCBO #144857)

Sperling Gewurztraminer 2013
Celebrate Canada Day with a Canadian wine. Ann Sperling is an award-winning vintner who makes wine at Southbrook in Niagara and at her family farm in BC's Okanagan Valley. My recommendation for her BC wine is releasedJune 20 at Vintages: Sperling Gewurztraminer 2013. Lychee, rose petal and grapefruit notes rise from the glass and enchant the nose. The wine is medium-bodied, off-dry with orange, peach and rose water flavours. This Gewurz costs $21.95 at Vintages outlets and it works well with Asian dishes, light curries or as an aperitif. That's Sperling Gewurztraminer 2013 from BC. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680News. ($21.95, Vintages #242958)
