San Pedro Castillo de Molina Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2001 (Chile)
$12.95 (general release)
This house produces some basic, inexpensive varietal wines, but their Castillo de Molina label is a step up in quality. Dense purple colour; smoky, minty nose of sweet blackberry with evident alcohol; medium to full-bodied, jammy blackcurrant and plum flavours, juicy and soft middle palate with a lively acidic finish. ***½
Food match: barbecued ribs, beef stew

Château des Charmes Riesling 2001 (Ontario)
$9.95
Ontario Riesling continues to be the best buy in local wines. This year Château des Charmes celebrates its 25th anniversary. The wine is pale straw in colour with a lime tint and already developing petrol notes; off-dry, light-bodied, sweet grapefruit and apricot taste; well made. Great value. ***½
Food match: aperitif wine or with Thai dishes

Fortant de France Sauvignon Blanc 2002 (Pays d'Oc)
$8.45
Who said you couldn't get a decent white wine under $8.50? This wine is a great bargain for the quality. Pale straw colour with a nose of grapefruit rind; the palate is more comforting with a dry green plum flavour, medium-bodied and fresh with a good crisp finish. Great value. ***½
Food match: Caesar salad, grilled trout
