680 NEWS wine reviews – December 4–6, 2015

Robert Oatley McLaren Vale Shiraz 2013
With the onset of cold weather it's time to bring out those big reds – and that means Australian Shiraz. Just released at Vintages is Robert Oatley McLaren Vale Shiraz 2013. To use the vernacular, this wine is a real "beaut" and won't cost you "big bikkies." For $19.95 you get a dense purple wine with a floral, blackberry nose with notes of leather; on the palate it's dry and savoury with blackberry and black olive flavours, ending with ripe, soft tannins. Serve it with hearty winter casseroles or pepper steak. That's Robert Oatley McLaren Vale Shiraz 2013 from Australia. For Post City Magazines I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($19.95, Vintages #327387)

Callejón del Crimen Gran Reserva Malbec 2008
If you think that Malbec from Argentina is a wine that can't age, pick up a bottle of Callejón del Crimen Gran Reserva Malbec 2008. With nearly 8 years under its belt, this wine is dense purple in colour with a toasty, cedary nose of black fruits. It's full-bodied with richly extracted sweet fruit and great balance. It costs $22.95 at Vintages, more than you might think of spending on an Argentinian Malbec, but it's worth it. A real red meat wine. That's Callejón del Crimen Gran Reserva Malbec 2008 from Argentina. For Post City Magazines I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($22.95, Vintages #357467)
