Veuve Ambal Crémant de Bourgogne Grand Cuvée Brut
If you're celebrating the holiday with sparkling wine, here's a real bargain: Veuve Ambal Crémant de Bourgogne Grand Cuvée Brut. This sparkling Chardonnay from Burgundy is straw coloured with a toasty, apple and citrus bouquet; it's medium bodied, dry, with lively lemon-lime acidity and flavours of apple and warm brioche. Great value at $17.95 from LCBO stores. To open, hold the cork still and twist the bottle away from it. That way you won't get a fountain of wine. My suggestion for New Year's Eve and beyond: Veuve Ambal Crémant de Bourgogne Grand Cuvée Brut from France. For Post City Magazine, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($17.95, LCBO #429688)

Lakeview Cellars Syrah 2012
If your New Year's resolution is to drink more Ontario wine you could start off the year with a well-priced red – Lakeview Cellars Syrah 2012. Syrah is usually thought of as a warm weather grape grown in the Rhone Valley or Australia's Barossa Valley but it produces a very interesting wine in cooler climates. This Niagara Syrah is deep ruby in colour with a savoury, red berry, herbal nose; it's medium-bodied and dry with a herb-tinged raspberry flavour. There's a touch of sweetness in mid-palate but it's nicely balanced. And the good news is that it's only $14.95 at Vintages outlets. Serve it with red meat dishes or hard cheeses. That's Lakeview Cellars Syrah 2012 from Ontario. Wishing you all a healthy and prosperous New Year. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($14.95, Vintages #404053)
