Chateau des Charmes Gamay Noir "Droit" St. David's Bench Vineyard 2000 (Niagara Peninsula, Ontario)
$14.95 (Vintages, and winery 905-262-4219 www.chateaudescharmes.com)
Paul Bosc propagated this clone from a single vine in his original vineyard. Deep purple colour; plum and black cherry on the nose; full-bodied, firm, black cherry, fruity with lively acidity and little tannin. Reminiscent of a cru Beaujolais. Good value. ***˝
Food match: veal dishes, grilled salmon

Williams & Humbert Dry Sack Sherry
$10.85
An old favourite in a gussied up new package. Deep amber colour; nuts, dried fig, chamomile nose; off dry, smooth, toasted nut and dried fig flavours; great length, flavour goes on and on. ****
Food match: served chilled with paella, grilled almonds

Yellow Tail Shiraz 2002 (Australia)
$11.25
The marketing sensation of the wine world, this label has blitzed the worldwide market with a portfolio of accessible, entry level wines. This Shiraz is deep ruby in colour with a smoky, sweet blackberry nose; sweet and jammy with plum and blackberry flavours that sit thickly on the palate with soft tannins but with just enough acidity to stop it seeming confected and clean off the finish. ***˝
Food match: barbecued ribs, osso buco
