Wines of the Week for January 21st, 2016

The following wines will be released at Vintages on Saturday January 23rd:

Willy Gisselbrecht Tradition Gewurztraminer (Alsace)
($18.95, Vintages #928390)
Spot on Alsace Gewurz at an affordable price. Spicy, lychee and melon nose with concentrated lychee and rose petal flavours rounded with a honeyed note. A touch of sweetness in mid-palate mitigated by a crisp acidic finish. ****½ (89)
Food match: Thai dishes; pork chop

Château de Lamarque 2010 (Haut-Médoc, Bordeaux)
($39.95, Vintages #440198)
Dense purple colour with a smoky-cedary nose embellished with tar and black fruit aromas. Medium-bodied and dry with well extracted spicy blackberry and blackcurrant flavours. The tannins are ripe and mellow though the oak is evident at the moment. Will reward two years of cellaring. ***** (90)
Food match: rack of lamb; veal chop

Château des Desmoiselles 2010 (Côtes de Castillon, Bordeaux)
($17.95, Vintages #348755)
This wine has the same alcohol level as Ch. de Lamarque (14%) and the same dense purple colour. There's vanilla oak spice on the nose that mingles with cedar and blueberry tones. Medium-bodied and dry, it's soft on the palate and easy drinking with a firm tannic finish. **** (88)
Food match: leg of lamb; mature cheddar
