Wines of the Week February 4, 2016

Errazuriz Max Reserva Sauvignon Blanc 2015 (Chile)
$15.95 (LCBO #273342)
Pale straw colour with a lime tint, this wine has a grassy, green pepper and green plum nose; it's medium-bodied, dry, mouth-filling with flavours of gooseberry, green fig and passionfruit. Great length and great value. ***** (90)
Food match: seafood; oysters

Popov Vrsnik Merlot 2011 (Macedonia)
$13.95 (Vintages #429746)
We don't often see wines from Macedonia at the LCBO but this one is not to be missed. This Merlot has an amazing depth of fruit for its price tag. Dense purple in colour, with a blueberry and cedar bouquet, it's medium to full-bodied, well-balanced with a lovely mouth-feel, offering tobacco and blueberry flavours and finishing firmly. Great value at the price. ***** (90)
Food match: lamb or beef dishes

Trapiche Broquel Bonarda 2013 (Agrentina)
$14.95 (Vintages #55558)
As easy on the pocket as it is the palate, this robust red is dense purple in colour with a spicy, black plum and cherry bouquet. In spite of its 14% alcohol, it's medium-bodied, fruit-driven with a lively spine of acidity and a cedary, chocolate finish. The Bonarda grape, incidentally, is known in California as Charbono. **** (88)
Food match: red meat dishes; fresh parmesan
