680 NEWS wine reviews – February 12–14, 2016

Lakeview Cellars Cabernet Franc Icewine 2013
Instead of roses and chocolates for Valentine's Day this year, why not surprise your partner with a bottle of Ontario Icewine? A, you'd be helping the local economy, and B, you'd be doing your taste buds a favour. Lakeview Cellars Cabernet Franc Icewine 2013 would be just the job. Cherry-red colour with a minerally, earthy-cedary, sweet red berry nose, it's rich and full on the palate, beautifully balanced, with strawberry and honey flavours and enough acidity to stop it from cloying. It costs $29.95 for a 200 mL bottle. That's Lakeview Cellars Cabernet Franc Icewine 2013 at Vintages outlets. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($29.95, Vintages #53397)

Trapiche Broquel Bonarda 2013
Here's a lusty wine for your Valentine's night dinner that's as easy on the pocket as it is the palate – Trapiche Broquel Bonarda 2013 from Argentina. Clocking in at $14.95 in Vintages stores, this robust red is dense purple in colour with a spicy, black plum and cherry bouquet. In spite of its 14% alcohol, it's medium-bodied, fruit-driven with a lively spine of acidity and a cedary, chocolate finish. The Bonarda grape, incidentally, is known in California as Charbono. A wine suitable for red meat dishes. That's Trapiche Broquel Bonarda 2013 from Argentina. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($14.95, Vintages #55558)
