680 NEWS wine reviews – February 26–28, 2016

Strewn Gewurztraminer 2014
Gewurztraminer in Ontario is a hit-and-miss kind of thing but occasionally someone hits the bull's-eye. In this case it was Strewn winery with their 2014 Gewurz. Alsace is the yardstick by which all Grewuztraminer are measured and this one stacks up very well for varietal typicity. Pale straw in colour, it has that characteristic lychee and rose petal nose and Turkish delight flavour, finishing elegantly dry on a pear-like note. LCBO's general list costs is $13.95. Match it with smoked salmon or Asian dishes. That's Strewn Gewurztraminer 2014 from Ontario. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($13.95, LCBO #65359)

La Posta Armando Bonarda 2014
Something different in the way of red wine from Argentina today – not Malbec but the Bonarda grape. La Posta Armando Bonarda 2014, newly released at Vintages, is purple-black in colour with a spicy, vanilla and black cherry nose. Medium-bodied and dry with good presence in the mouth, it has black plum and cherry flavours ending on a cedary note. The good news is that at $14.95 a bottle it punches way above its weight. A red meat wine if ever there was one. That's La Posta Armando Bonarda 2014 from Argentina at Vintages outlets. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($14.95, Vintages #261586)
