680 NEWS wine reviews – April 1–3, 2016

Château des Charmes Barrel Fermented Chardonnay 2014
One of the best value Chardonnays from Ontario at the LCBO is Château des Charmes Barrel Fermented Chardonnay 2014. Priced at $13.95, it's a very versatile food wine. Straw coloured with a nose of apple butter and toasty oak, it's medium-bodied and dry with a fresh apple flavour and well-integrated oak. Beautifully balanced. It's the kind of wine you can serve with chicken or fish or a Caesar salad. That's Château des Charmes Barrel Fermented Chardonnay 2014 from the Niagara Peninsula. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($13.95, LCBO #81653)

Antu Syrah 2014
Syrah – or as the Aussies call it, Shiraz – is the sixth most widely planted grape in the world. Chile does a great job with it because it's a grape that likes warmth. Antu Syrah 2014 from Chile's Colchagua Valley is dense purple in colour with a spicy nose of blackcurrants backed by vanilla oak. The wine is full-bodied and dry with flavours of blackcurrant and dark plum carried on a lively spine of acidity that fill the palate. It costs $17.95 at Vintages outlets. Try it with grilled steak or roast beef. That's Antu Syrah 2014 from Chile at Vintages outlets. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($17.95, Vintages #675371)
