680 NEWS wine reviews – April 22–24, 2016

Piping Shrike Shiraz 2013
The Piping Shrike is South Australia's bird emblem. It's also the name of a Shiraz from the Barossa Valley that is currently nesting at Vintages outlets. Dense purple-black in colour, Piping Shrike Shiraz 2013 has a smoky, medicinal nose of blackberries with an earthy note; it's full-bodied, dry, firmly structured with lively acidity. It costs $21.95. An ideal accompaniment for spicy casseroles or aged Cheddar. That's Piping Shrike Shiraz 2013 from Australia. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($18.95, Vintages #48504)

Vineland Estates Elevation St. Urban Vineyard Riesling 2014
Vineland Estates has some of the oldest Riesling vines in Niagara. The St. Urban Vineyard was planted 35 years ago. The vines come from a clone propagated in the Mosel. From these vines winemaker Brian Schmidt produces a wine called Elevation. The 2014 Riesling is almost water white in colour with a minerally, floral, honeyed grapefruit nose. It's off-dry, light on the palate, beautifully balanced with great tension between fruit and acidity. It costs $19.95 a bottle at Vintages outlets. Serve it as an aperitif wine or with pork dishes. That's Vineland Estates Elevation Riesling 2014 from Ontario. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($19.95, Vintages #38117)
