 WINES OF THE WEEK

More Wines of the Week

  • Chantovent Domaine des Fées Shiraz
  • Woolpunda Red Block Shiraz 2000
  • Saint Roch Les Vignes Rouge 2000

The question I'm asked most often is "What's a good wine under $10?"

Okay, in life you get what you pay for, but there are some palatable wines at this price out there. I begin with a couple.

Chantovent Domaine des Fées Shiraz (Pays d'Oc)
$8.95
The French are acknowledging here the worldwide acceptance of Australia's Shiraz (a grape they normally call Syrah). Medium ruby colour; earthy, spicy, red berry bouquet; medium-bodied with a peppery, strawberry flavour, firmly structured with form-fitting tannins. Good value. ***½
Food match: pepper steak, penne puttanesca

Woolpunda Red Block Shiraz 2000 (Riverland, Australia)
$9.95
Just to ring the variations, an Aussie Shiraz aged in French oak. Ruby colour; minty, eucalyptus nose; sweet blackberry and menthol flavour, full-bodied with decent length and drying tannins. Good value. ***½
Food match: BBQ ribs, old cheddar

Saint Roch Les Vignes Rouge 2000 (Côtes de Provence)
$11.95
Deep plum purple colour; herby, blackberry and earthy on the nose; medium-bodied with a dry flavour of licorice, red berries, firmly structured, with a long, dusty tannin finish. ***½
Food match: grilled Italian spicy sausage, lamb shanks
