680 NEWS wine reviews – May 20–22, 2016

Catena Appellation San Carlos Cabernet Franc 2013
Argentina is best known for Malbec but they also make other classic Bordeaux varieties. Currently at Vintages is Catena Appellation San Carlos Cabernet Franc 2013. Dense purple in colour, the wine shows a vanilla oak and currant nose; it's full-bodied with surprisingly ripe red and blackcurrant flavours tinged with notes of mint and pencil lead and finishing firmly with evident tannins. It costs $19.95 at Vintages and is the kind of wine that marries well with barbecued meats as well as mature, hard cheeses. That's Catena Appellation San Carlos Cabernet Franc 2013 from Argentina. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($19.95, Vintages #450106)

Tabali Reserva Especial Syrah 2012
I'm a great fan of the Syrahs they're making in Chile now, especially from the cool Limari region. Take for example Tabali Reserva Especial Syrah 2012. It's dense purple-black in colour with an intense nose of blackberries and iodine; rich and full-bodied, spicy and herbal on the palate, it has a lovely rich mouth-feel and a firm tannic finish. It costs $17.95 at Vintages outlets and is currently my go-to red for barbecued meats. That's Tabali Reserva Especial Syrah 2012 from Chile. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($17.95, Vintages #213538)
