680 NEWS wine reviews – June 10–12, 2016

Casal de Ventozela Loureiro 2014
Portugal produces the ideal summer wine – Vino Verde. The green in the name refers to the youth of the wine rather than its colour, but it does speak to the lushness of the landscape in Minho region just south of Spain. The major grape here for this crisply dry wine is Loureiro. Casal de Ventozela Loureiro 2014, newly arrived at Vintages outlets, is pale straw in colour with a fragrant nose of dried carnations with a thread of minerality. Almost Muscat-like in character, it has flavours of grapefruit and lime. The price, an affordable $14.95. Ideal for hot summer days. That's Casal de Ventozela Loureiro 2014 from Portugal. For Post City Magazines I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($14.95, Vintages #445098)

Sartori L'Appassione 2013
Sartori L'Appassione 2013 is a Valopicella made from Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella. It's deep purple-ruby in colour with a cedary, plum and cherry nose heightened by licorice and a delightful note of dried rose petals. Dry and medium- to full-bodied, the wine is beautifully balanced with enough tannin on the finish to give it structure. It sells for $17.95 at Vintages outlets and marries well with red meats or pasta dishes. That's Sartori L'Appassione 2013 from Italy's Veneto region at Vintages outlets. For Post City Magazines I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($17.95, Vintages #451716)
