More Wines of the Week

  • Santa Irene Bonarda Organic 2015
  • Pieropan Soave Classico 2014
  • Casal de Ventozela Loureiro 2014

Santa Irene Bonarda Organic 2015 (Argentina)
$16.95 (Vintages #450148)
This is an organic wine that's dense purple-ruby in colour with a complex nose of spicy plum with cedar, pencil lead and leather notes; it's medium-bodied, dry, with savoury plum and cherry flavours and a lively spine of acidity, finishing firmly. ****½ (89)
Food match: barbecued meats; hard cheeses

Pieropan Soave Classico 2014 (Veneto)
$17.95 (Vintages #946848)
The wine – one of my favourite Soaves – is straw-coloured with a lime tint. It offers a lifted nose of spicy yellow apple and peach with a minerally-floral note. Medium-bodied and dry, it's lively on the palate with a lovely mouth-feel, showing citrus and white peach flavours. **** (88)
Food match: aperitif wine; grilled fish

Casal de Ventozela Loureiro 2014 (Portugal)
$14.95 (Vintages #445098)
Portugal produces the ideal summer wine – Vino Verde. The green in the name refers to the youth of the wine rather than its colour, but it does speak to the lushness of the landscape in Minho region just south of Spain. The major grape here for this crisply dry wine is Loureiro. This vinho Verde is pale straw in colour with a fragrant nose of dried carnations with a thread of minerality. Almost Muscat-like in character, it has flavours of grapefruit and lime. **** (88.5)
Food match: tapas; charcuterie
