Wines of the week for June 23rd, 2016

Three wines to be released at Vintages on Saturday, June 25th

Cousiño-Macul Don Matias Reserva Syrah 2014 (Maipo Valley, Chile)
$14.95 (Vintages #443515)
One of the best buys from Vintages' release tomorrow is this Syrah from Chile. It's a dense purple wine with a smoky, blackberry nose augment by vanilla oak. Full-bodied and dry, it offers richly extracted flavours of blackcurrants and blackberries shaped by sweet tannins. It's an impressive wine for the price. ****½ (89)
Food match: spicy ribs; barbecued steak

Domaine des Terrisses Grande Tradition Gaillac 2012 (Gaillac, France)
$17.95 (Vintages #451922)
The Gaillac region in southwest France produces some nifty red wines from grapes you may not have ever heard of. Released tomorrow at Vintages, this tasty red is made from Duras, Broucal and a little Syrah. It's deep purple-ruby in colour with an earthy black fruit nose in which the small amount of Syrah sings through. Medium-bodied and dry, the smoky, savoury flavours make it the perfect red wine for barbecued meats. ****½ (89)

Parker Coonawarra Estate Chardonnay 2014 (Australia)
$19.95 (Vintages #447029)
Straw coloured with a nose of lime, apple, toasty oak with a barnyard note; full-bodied, dry, richly extracted fruit with lively acidity. ****½ (89)
Food match: grilled salmon; roast chicken
