680 NEWS wine reviews – August 12–14, 2016

Miguel Torres Las Mulas Reserva Merlot Organic 2015
The Miguel Torres winery in Chile makes their wines more in European style than New World. A case in point is Miguel Torres Las Mulas Reserva Merlot 2015. This organic wine is ruby-purple in colour with a cedary, spicy, blueberry nose topped with a pencil lead note. Medium-bodied and dry, it has well-extracted blackcurrant flavours with nicely integrated oak and a dry, savoury finish. It cost $12.95 at the LCBO. An ideal wine forburgers, grilled sausage, or barbecued chicken. That's Miguel Torres Las Mulas Reserva Merlot 2015 from Chile. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($12.95, LCBO #454868)

Villa Maria Cellar Selection Pinot Gris 2015
Regular listeners to these wine reviews will be familiar with my indifference to Pinot Gris, but recently I tasted one that could make me change my mind: Villa Maria Cellar Selection Pinot Gris 2015 from New Zealand, currently at Vintages outlets, is almost water white in colour but has lots of flavour. The nose is minerally, peach pit and you experience well-extracted flavours of which peach and lemon. It costs $19.95. A wine for cold chicken or salmon. That's Villa Maria Cellar Selection Pinot Gris 2015 from New Zealand. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($19.95, Vintages #447490)
