680 NEWS wine reviews – August 19–21, 2016

Pala I Fiori Vermentino di Sardegna 2015
We don't see many Sardinian wines coming throught the LCBO, and not many Vermentinos either. Well, here's a very impressive Sardinian Vermentino new to Vintages stores: Pala I Fiori Vermentino did Sardegna 2015 is pale straw in colour with a smoky, minerally nose of apples with a floral grace note; medium-bodied and dry, the wine has great length, finishing on a grapefruit zest note. The price: $14.95. A great match for seafood. That's Pala I Fiori Vermentino di Sardegna 2015 from Italy. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($14.95, Vintages #52068)

E. & J. Gallo Ghost Pines Merlot 2013
E. & J. Gallo, the world's largest winery, continues to surprise adding new wines to its huge portfolio. Gallo's Ghost Pines Merlot 2013, a blend of grapes from Sonoma and Napa, is deep purple-ruby in colour with a nose of plum, black cherry and mocha chocolate. It's full-bodied with mouth-filling flavours of black plum, cherry and chocolate notes, finishing on ripe; grainy tannins. It costs $19.15 at the LCBO. Match it with braised beef or pulled pork. That's E. & J. Gallo Ghost Pines Merlot 2013. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($19.15, LCBO #454868)
