680 NEWS wine reviews – September 16–18, 2016

Baron Philippe de Rothschild Escudo Rojo 2013
In addition to their renowned Bordeaux Châteaux, the house of Baron Philippe de Rothschild has a winery in Chile where they produce Escudo Rojo, which translates from the Spanish as Red Shield – the same as the original German name. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère, Syrah and Cabernet Franc, the 2013 Escudo Rojo is a dense purple in colour with a smoky, cedary, black fruit nose. It's medium-bodied, dry with savoury flavours of blackcurrant and blackberry, a lovely mouth-feel and a coffee bean note on the finish. It costs $18.95 at Vintages. A wine that cries out for barbecued steak. That's Baron Philippe de Rothschild Escudo Rojo 2013 from Chile at Vintages outlets. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($18.95, Vintages #464354)

De Wetshof Limestone Hill Unwooded Chardonnay 2015
South Africa's wine prices are extremely wallet-friendly. Take for instance De Wetshof Limestone Hill Unwooded Chardonnay 2015, just released at Vintages for $16.95. Medium straw in colour, it has a minerally bouquet of fresh pears. Full-bodied and dry, the wine has richly extracted sweet pear flavours, well-balanced, with great length. It's a versatile food wine that can match roast chicken or salmon. That's De Wetshof Limestone Hill Unwooded Chardonnay 2015 from South Africa at Vintages outlets. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($16.95, Vintages #419622)
