680 NEWS wine reviews – October 21–23, 2016

Alpha Estate Axia Red 2012
Angelos Iatridis is the owner of Domaine Alpha in Macdeconia and he's also one of the best winemakers in Greece. Currently on LCBO shelves is Alpha Estate Axia Red 2012, a 50/50 blend of Syrah and the local variety, Xynomavro. The wine is deep ruby in colour, offering a bouquet of cherry and leather with a light floral note; it's medium to full-bodied, dry with rich plum and blackberry flavours carried on lively acidity. It costs $17.95 and is perfect for hearty meat dishes or strong cheese. That's Alpha Estate Axia Red 2012 from Greece. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($17.95, LCBO #392282) (89)

Mount Brown Estates Pinot Gris 2015
Regular listeners to this spot will know by now that Pinot Grigio is not my favourite wine, but recently I tasted one from New Zealand that could make me change my mind. Mount Brown Estates Pinot Gris 2015 from the Waipara Valley, currently at Vintages outlets, is straw-coloured with a minerally, peach bouquet with a lemon zest note. Medium to full-bodied, this wine is richly extracted with flavours of peach and pear and a long finish. It costs $18.95 and works well with salmon or chicken. That's Mount Brown Estates Pinot Gris 2015 from New Zealand. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($18.95, Vintages #466037) (89)
