Wines of the Week for November 24th, 2016

Bouchard Père & Fils Maçon-Lugny St. Pierre 2015 (Burgundy)
$17.95 (LCBO #51573)
This wine is a great introduction to white burgundy at a bargain price. Straw coloured with a nose of green pineapple and citrus fruit with a thread of minerality; medium-bodied, dry, lemony, apple flavour with a spicy leesy note. Good long finish. ****½ (89)
Food match: grilled fish; ripe Camembert

Alvear Solera 1927 Pedro Ximenez (Montilla-Morilles, Spain)
$19.95 (375 mL, Vintages #463034; released in Vintages Saturday, November 26th)
A super sweet dessert wine (the grape is pronounced "Him-main-ez"). Brown in colour with an olive green rim; a nose of fig jam; full-bodied, concentrated sweet riaisiny-fig flavours; rich and full on the palate with balancing acidity and great length. ***** (94)
Food match: fruit desserts; over ice cream

Santa Julia Magna 2014 (Mendoza, Argentina)
$15.95 (Vintages #93799, released in Vintages Saturday, November 26th)
A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Syrah. Dense purple in colour; cedary, cherry nose; medium-bodied, dry, richly extracted cherry and plum flavours with balancing acidity and a form structure. Great value. ****½ (89)
Food match: red meat dishes; smoked turkey
