680 NEWS wine reviews – December 9–11, 2016

Bouchard Père & Fils Macon-Lugny St. Pierre 2015
White Burgundy can be costly but a good introduction to this versatile food wine is Bouchard Père & Fils Macon-Lugny St. Pierre 2015. For $17.95 at the LCBO you get a straw-coloured, medium-bodied dry wine with a bouquet of green pineapple and citrus fruit with thread of minerality. It's the kind of wine you can match with chicken or fish because of the fresh acidity. Chill it lightly. That's Bouchard Père & Fils Macon-Lugny St. Pierre 2015 from Burgundy, which, incidentally is the region with the world's most expensive agricultural land per acre. For Post City magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($15.95 until January 1, then $17.95, LCBO #51573) (89)

Bertrand Grand Terroir Les Aspres Syrah Mourvèdre Grenache 2013
The Côtes du Roussillon region in southern France produces some very taste wines at wallet-friendly prices. Currently at Vintages outlets is Gérard Bertrand Grand Terroir Les Aspres Syrah Mourvèdre Grenache 2013. It costs $18.95. The wine is deep ruby-purple colour in colou, offering a savoury-herbal nose of blackberries and licorice with oak notes; it's medium to full-bodied, dry, with a velvety mouth-feel and flavours of blackberry, black raspberry and vanilla oak carried on fresh acidity to a finish of ripe tannins. A wine for steak if ever there was one. That's Gérard Bertrand Grand Terroir Les Aspres Syrah Mourvèdre Grenache 2013 from France at Vintages. For Post City magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($18.95, Vintages #413245) (89)
