Royal DeMaria - A Heads Up Winery (June 15, 2000)

You hear a lot about doctors and dentists buying vineyards and setting up wineries these days. Well, in Ontario a hair stylist named Joseph DeMaria has created his own enterprise and is selling his wines to top Toronto restaurants and hotels.

Where most vintners will start with something simple like Chardonnay, Joseph launched right into making Vidal Icewine. His winery is built on a 75 acre property at Cherry Avenue, Vineland. Located 70 miles south west of Toronto this area, as the address suggests, is the heart of Ontario's fruitland.

Currently he crushes 110 tonnes of Vidal for Icewine, producing 5,000 cases of half bottles. He sells them for $42.95 Cdn and looks to the Far East and Chinese markets to expand his production to 70,000 cases within five years. Next year he will introduce Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc; and down the road, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Villard Noir.

An Abruzzi native, Joseph DeMaria was a home winemaker (like every other Italian in Toronto) before turning professional.
