680 NEWS wine reviews – March 3–5, 2017

Montes Alpha Pinot Noir 2014
Montes, for my money is one of the best producers in Chile, especially the wines under the Montes Alpha Series. Currently at Vintages is Montes Alpha Pinot Noir 2014 from the cooler Casablanca region. This deeply coloured wine has real Pinot character – slightly herbal, cherry and strawberry on the nose, it's dry, medium-bodied, with red plum and cherry flavours tinged with herbal notes and carried on lively acidity. It costs $19.95 and works well with duck breast or veal. That's Montes Alpha Pinot Noir 2014 from Chile. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($19.95, Vintages #143214) (88.5)

Versado Malbec 2013
Ontario winemakers Peter Gamble and Ann Sperling have a small vineyard in Argentina's Mendoza Valley where they grow Malbec. They call their wine Versado and the 2013 vintage is available at Vintages outlets. Dense purple in colour, it has a spicy black plum and blackberry nose with a note of tar, backed by vanilla oak. Full-bodied and dry, it fills the mouth with spicy, black fruit flavours. It costs $19.95. Ideal for rich red meat dishes. That's Versado Malbec 2013 from Argentina. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($19.95, Vintages #317008) (90)
