 WINES OF THE WEEK

More Wines of the Week

  • Miolo Lote 43 Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 1999
  • Tin Barn Russian River Zinfandel 2001
  • Firestick Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon 2001

This week I'm looking at wines that are not available through the store system but can be purchased from the importing agents who bring them in.

Miolo Lote 43 Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 1999 (Brazil)
$30.00 (available by private order from Alicia Lau Imports & Exports, 416-818-8785, www.vin-howine.com)
This is the first Brazilian winery I have tasted. Lote 43 refers to a vineyard plot. The wine is mature ruby in colour with a tawny rim; on the nose, cedar, dried fruits and milk chocolate; elegant red- and blackcurrant flavours. A very interesting wine in claret style. ****
Food match: roast guinea fowl; rack of lamb

Tin Barn Russian River Zinfandel 2001 (Sonoma, California)
$49.95 (available through Diamond Estates, 416-488-4922)
Greg Fowler and winemaker Mike Lancaster are two Canadians who own this small Sonoma winery. This Zin is made from purchased grapes from a 35-year-old vineyard. Ruby colour with a nose of leather and ripe plums; intense, full-bodied, dark chocolate and plum flavours, soft mouthfeel with dusty tannins. ****˝
Food match: game dishes; gorgonzola

Firestick Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 (Langhorne Creek, South Australia)
$15.65 (Russell Woodman Agency, 416-767-5114, woodmanwine@sprint.ca)
This is a blend of 77% Shiraz, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, aged nine months in French oak. Purple-ruby colour; ripe blackberry and caramel nose with a touch of spice; full-bodied, jammy but nicely balanced with a warm finish. ****
Food match: pepper steak; beef casserole
