Top Picks from Vintages' October 4 Release

Hugel & Fils Gewurztraminer Tradition 2000, Alsace
$28.90
This is a superb Gewurz, the quintessential expression of the variety. Straw colour with an intense, ethereal nose of lychee and rose petals. Medium-bodied, beautifully balanced with a delicious, spicy lingering finish. ***** (out of *****)

Woodstock Wine/Collett Wines Shiraz 2000, Limestone Coast/McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek, South Australia
$19.95
This is a bargain Shiraz. Dense purple in colour with a concentrated nose of blackberry, mint and vanilla; full bodied, firmly structured with a peppery blackberry flavour and very elegant for all its richness. ****½

Château Franc-Cardinal 2000, Côtes de Francs
$18.00
A charming claret from Bordeaux's tinest region. This Canadian-owned château produces a fresh, dry, red currant-flavoured, medium-bodied wine with elegant lines. It's not powerful, but its discretion will win you over. ****

Marchesi Frescobaldi/Robert Mondavi Luce delle Vite 1999, Tuscany
$99.95
This is the best vintage of this wine I have tried. It's dense ruby in colour with an engaging bouquet of blackberries and chocolate with a floral grace note; full-bodied with a chunky mouthfeel and sweet blackberry flavour that goes on and on. ****½

Champagne Nicolas Feuillatte Rosé Brut, Champagne
$45.95
Most rosé champagnes are pretty expensive but this one offers great value for the money. Deeply coloured (salmon pink), it has a nose of strawberries and dried herbs; full-bodied and mouth-filling, it has a winey Pinot Noir flavour with a ripe strawberry taste and lively acidic finish. ****

For reviews of all the wines I tasted at the October Vintages pre-release tasting, see my wine database (members only).
