680 NEWS wine reviews – April 14–16, 2017

Pascual Toso Malbec
This coming Easter Monday is World Malbec Day – so why not celebrate the grape that defines Argentina's wine industry with a bottle of Pascual Toso Malbec 2015.  At $13.95 it's not going to put too much strain on your wine budget. Deep ruby-purple in colour, with a spicy, fresh, ripe plum-cherry nose lifted with cedary notes. Dry and medium bodied, it's smooth on the palate with ripe plum and cherry flavours and a lively, cedary finish. Match it with lamb. That's Pascual Toso Malbec 2015 from Argentina. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 NEWS. ($13.95, LCBO #35170) (88)

Kim Crawford Wild Grace Small Parcels Chardonnay 2015
Today's wine recommendation is Kim Crawford Wild Grace Small Parcels Chardonnay 2015 from New Zealand. Wild Grace is not the winemaker but refers – according to the website – to "the rugged beauty of the landscape surrounding the Hawke's Bay vineyards." But it could well describe personality of this wild-fermented wine. Pale straw in colour, it has a smoky, toasty nose with spicy oak notes; it's medium to full-bodied, richly extracted with spicy citrus and apple flavours melded with toasty oak. It costs $24.95 at Vintages outlets and it's ideal for roast chicken or grilled salmon. That's Kim Crawford Wild Grace Small Parcels Chardonnay 2015 from New Zealand. For Post City Magazines, I'm Tony Aspler, 680 News. ($24.95, Vintages # 378604) (91)
