 WINES OF THE WEEK

More Wines of the Week

  • Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2002
  • Rust en Vrede Estate 2000
  • Sinnya Merlot 2002

Busy week this week with lots of tastings, including a South African event with a range of wines, many of which are not in the stores but are available through the importing agents.

Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2002 (South Africa)
$26 (through consignment – Wineworld Importers, 416-487-7147, wineworld@attglobal.net)
This wine beat out New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc at a blind tasting. Pale straw in colour with an intense nose of nettles, passionfruit and citrus; medium-bodied with a concentrated sweet fig, cut grass and lemon. Great length and a zingy finish. ****½
Food match: Caesar salad; goat cheese

Rust en Vrede Estate 2000 (South Africa)
$49 (sold in six-packs through Thompson Vintage Trade, 905-634-2325, vintagetrade@cogeco.ca)
Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot were vinified separately and left to mature in 300-litre French and American oak barrels for 18 months. The result is a stunning, multi-layered red. Dense purple in colour with a nose of pencil shavings, iodine, smoke and blackberries; full-bodied, richly extracted with great balance. *****
Food match: roast lamb; venison

Sinnya Merlot 2002 (South Africa)
$9.95 (RKW Wine imports, 905-569-6115, winery@idirect.com)
This wine is available on the LCBO's general list and is well worth the money. Medium purple colour; the oak is evident on the nose, sweet, smoky and toasty, but there is enough red berry fruit to give it interest. ***
Food match: BBQ ribs, hamburgers
