Burgundy 1998 (June 15, 2000)

The 1998 vintage in Burgundy won't go down as a great one but there are some good wines to be had. I had a tasting of Bouchard Père & Fils reds and whites recently and my overall prognosis is that the reds showed better than the whites. The vintage is characterised by thicker skins and smaller berries that the 1997 or '96, which means higher tannins.

In reds, my favourites were:

  • Savigny-Les-Beaune Lavières 1998 (sweet fruit with a floral grace note, lots of character, $35)
  • Volnay Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot 1998 (smoky, black cherry, well extracted and balanced, $56)
  • Le Corton 1998 (purple colour, evolved nose with a hint of barnyard, spicy black raspberry flavour, firm and well structured, $84)
  • Nuits St. Georges Clos des Argillières 1998 (spicy raspberry, well extracted, deep and sensuous, $65)
  • La Romanée Grand Cru 1998 (spicy, smoky plum, concentrated and mouthfilling, good acidity, well balanced, (don't even ask the price!)

Hail and frost played havoc with the whites in 1998 but the following BP&F white Burgundies are worthy of consideration:

  • Beaune 1998 (vanilla, apple and straw on the nose, well extracted and elegant, $49)
  • Meursault Genevières 1998 (spicy apple, clean and elegant with a smoky note; good acidic finish, $82)

(These wines are available through The Russell Woodman Agency: phone (416) 767 5114…Fax: (416) 767 9008…email: woodmanwine@sprint.ca)
