Frei Brothers Redwood Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 (California)
$14.95
This is another wine from the Gallo portfolio that will make a versatile food wine. It's medium ruby in colour with a nose of red currants, cedar and leather; the flavours may not remind you of California so much as cooler climate wines – red currant and raspberry – and the body is light too. *** (out of *****)
Food match: roast chicken; grilled liver

Henry of Pelham Merlot Unfiltered 2000 (Niagara Peninsula, Ontario)
$24.95 at the winery (905-684-8423; winery@henryofpelham.com)
Winemaker Ron Giesbrecht has added 15% cabernet Sauvignon to give this Merlot structure and staying power. Purple ruby in colour with a rich bouquet of blueberries and vanilla oak; well extracted fruit with a dry blubeberry and blackcurrant flavour ending with a medicinal note. ****
Food match: rack of lamb; duck breast in blueberry sauce

Woodstock Shiraz 2000 (Limestone Coast/McLaren Vale/Langhorne Creek, South Australia)
$19.95 (Vintages Stores only, #985416)
This is a bargain-priced Shiraz that has 10% Petit Verdot blended in. Dense purple, with a minty blackberry and vanilla nose; full-bodied and firmly structured with a peppery note; remarkably elegant and well made for the price. ****˝
Food match: game pie; pepper steak
