A Taste of Spain!
Spain is featued as the theme country at the 18th annual Ottawa Wine
and Food Show, November 7, 8 & 9, 2003.
The Trade Commission of Spain, in collaboration with top wineries, agents,
food distributors and the Tourist Office of Spain, is proud to have Spain
featured as the hosting theme country at the 18th annual edition of the
Ottawa Wine and Food Show. We will be bringing Canadian aficionados a
wide selection of our best wines and foods for their enjoyment.
Wine Spectator, in a cover article in its June 2003 issue, proclaimed
that Spain is "the new source of Europe's most exciting wine and
Spain is a country where food and wine matter. Not only because it is
one of the world's biggest producers of quality food and beverage products,
but because its gastronomy is as rich, varied and colourful as its history,
cultures, languages and people. Spain's gastronomy conveys strong, passionate
regionalism and historic culinary traditions. For many years, Spain has
been the best-kept culinary secret of North America. Today, Spanish gastronomy
is a trend-setter in Europe and the world.
Our celebrity guest chef is Teresa Barrenechea. Owner and chef of the
prestigious Restaurant "Marichu" in New York, Teresa has introduced
authentic Basque and Spanish cuisines to the United States. Author of
The Basque Table, for which she was awarded the National Gastronomy
Prize in Spain, she has been promoting our gastronomy all over the world,
teaching at the most prestigious schools in America and the world.
Spain is the country with the largest area under vine and is the world's
third largest producer of wine. These figures show how important wine
is for Spain, but what they do not reveal is the astonishing range of
wines Spain has to offer. The diversity of our soil, very different climatic
conditions, indigenous grape varieties, centuries-long traditions, and
last but not least, the passion of our wine makers have translated in
one of the most diverse and rich wine productions in the world.
Four different special wine tastings, in collaboration with the National
Capital Sommelier guild, will be able to help you get better acquainted
with our wines, our regions and our grapes (a Torres tasting, presented
by Carlos Soriano, from the winery; a sherry treasures tasting; a selection
of some of best red wines; and a "best of Spain" tasting featuring
a careful selection of Cavas, whites and reds).
During the show, you will be able to taste wines from more than 30 different
wineries. Representing their wineries will be Carlos Soriano from Torres;
Mercedes de Gregorio from Finca Allende, the award winning new Rioja winery;
Stanley Manski, right from the Osborne bodega; and Ramón Llorens,
wine maker at Bodegas Biurko Gorri.
We will also be bringing an incredible selection of gourmet products
from Spain: extra-virgin olive oils, olives, Sherry vinegar, piquillo
peppers, saffron, our well-known clementines, and of course a wide selection
of Spain's best cheeses, including Manchego!
Our Tourism Office in Canada will also be present at the show with information
on our wonderful country, tourist routes, anything you need to get to
know Spain better.
Be sure you do not miss it! A true Taste of Spain in Ottawa. Enjoy and
experience our foods, wines, learn about our gastronomy, our culture,
our country and join the growing numbers of Spain-addicts!
And the show's Spanish theme extends to the Westin Hotel. Teresa Barrenechea's
recipes will be featured at "Daly's Restaurant" for a 10-day
