 WINES OF THE WEEK

More Wines of the Week

  • Chapoutier La Ciboise 2002
  • Jeanjean Merlot 2002
  • Calvet Cabernet Sauvignon 2002

This week: three wines from southern France that are light on your pocketbook.

Chapoutier La Ciboise 2002 (Coteaux du Tricastin, Southern Rhone)
$10.25 (general release)
Made from Bourboulenc and Clairette, this wine is great value. Straw coloured with a nose of honey and apple; mouth-filling with a fresh, dry, minerally pear flavour and good length. ***
Food match: baked cod, crab salad

Jeanjean Merlot 2002 (Pays d'Oc)
$8.95 (general release)
An unoaked Merlot at a bargain price. Light ruby colour; red berry nose; dry, medium-bodied with a firm structure. Don't be deterred by the wavy bottle. ***
Food match: hamburgers, pizza

Calvet Cabernet Sauvignon 2002 (Pays d'Doc)
$8.95 (general release)
A gulpable light to medium-bodied Cab with a fruity redcurrant and raspberry flavour, a touch of spicy oak and enough tannin to give the wine structure. ***
Food match: lamb shanks, flank steak
