Beaujolais Nouveau... and the Rest  (November 18, 2003)

On Thursday, November 20th, the new Beaujolais was released along with other nouveau wines.

Basically, the original idea behind Beaujolias Nouveau was for the Beaujolais farmers to make a quick turnover by marketing the new harvest as a harbinger for the vintage. It was meant to tell you what the Burgundy made slightly further north would be like in terms of its ripeness and concentration of flavour.

Now everyone is getting in on a rather tired act.

The LCBO is releasing six new wines. In order of preference, here are my reviews.

Duboeuf Beaujolais-Villages Nouveau 2003
$15.95 (Vintages only)
Traditionally, the Villages Nouveaux have been more concentrated and fuller than the simpler Beaujolais Nouveaux. This one is dense purple with a floral, black cherry nose; nicely balanced and firm with a peppery finish. Fresh and gulpable. ***½

Negrar Novello del Veneto 2003 (Veneto)
$8.95
The best buy. Deep, opaque purple; a floral, plum nose; soft mouth feel, fruity plum flavour with an earthy note, soft tannins. ***

Mommessin Beaujolais Nouveau 2003
$13.95
Light purple colour; sweetish banana nose; light and fruity with cranberry and pomegranate flavours. ***

Duboeuf Gamay Nouveau 2003 (Rhône)
$8.95
Made from the same grape as Beaujolais but grown in the Ardèche. Deep purple colour; sweet cherry nose, light and fruity with a osur cherry flavour; lively acidic finish. ***

JeanJean Arabesque Syrah Nouveau 2003 (Vins de Pays d'Oc)
$8.95
Light purple colour; banana nose; soft banana and raspberry flavour, medium-bodied but somewhat dilute; firm finish.***

Pelee Island Gamay Noir Nouveau 2003 (Ontario)
$9.95
Pale ruby with a bluish tint; a nose of green peppers and peanut shell; tart cranberry and green pepper flavours. **
