  • Villa Maria Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc 2002
  • Ernest & Julio Gallo Sierra Valley Merlot 2002

Château des Charmes Brut (Ontario)
$19.95 (Vintages)
As close as you can get to the flavour of champagne in Ontario. Deep colour; mature, apple nose; medium-bodied, clean and elegant with a long, dry, yeasty apple finish. ****½
Food match: oysters; poached salmon

Villa Maria Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc 2002 (New Zealand)
$14.95 (general release)
This is a Sauvignon in bold, extrovert style. Straw coloured with an intense nose of cut grass, passionfruit and guava, it's full-bodied and mouth-filling with a sweetness at the core that gives way to a citric acidic finish. Good value. ****
Food match: deep fried calamari; pineapple chicken

Ernest & Julio Gallo Sierra Valley Merlot 2002 (California)
$8.95 (general release)
Just shows what economies of scale can do: a wine that outperforms its price category. Deep ruby colour with a jammy blueberry-blackberry nose; full-bodied and well extracted sweet, chocolaty fruit. Great value. ***½
Food match: hamburger; moussaka
