The process of fermentation creates sulphites in wine which some imbibers mistakenly blame for hangovers. It's not the sulphites that create the problem but dehydration. The Moldovan city of Cricova lays claim to the world's largest underground cellar. It boasts 40 miles of wine storage tunnels... The number one imported wine in the United States in 2002 was Pinot Grigio... Australia's most expensive wine, Penfold's Grange, is experimenting with screwcaps. Twenty cases of the 2002 vintage were bottled under this closure. Apparently these tests have been going on since the 1980s... India's population drinks a paltry .006 bottles of wine per capita. The worldwide average is five bottles a year. Canada is 35th on the league table of wine consumption. As a nation we drink about 17 bottles a head per annum. Some of us are doing heroic work to maintain the national average.
