 WINES OF THE WEEK

More Wines of the Week

  • Henry of Pelham Sauvignon Blanc 2002
  • Southbrook Winery Triomphus Chardonnay 1998
  • Bötzingen Gewürztraminer Kabinett 2002

Henry of Pelham Sauvignon Blanc 2002 (Niagara Peninsula, Ontario)
$14.95 (at the winery tel. 905-684-8423, fax 905-684-8444, Winery@henryofpelham.com)
Pale straw colour; grassy, apple peel and grapefruit bouquet; medium-bodied, firm and fresh; more Loire in style than New World; lively acidic finish. ****
Food match: grilled calamari; artichokes

Southbrook Winery Triomphus Chardonnay 1998 (Major Mackenzie/Bathurst, north of Toronto)
$79.90 magnum (winery only – 905-832-2548)
This wine is also available in the 750 mL format ($39.95), but it tastes better in the magnum size. Deeply coloured, old gold; caramel, ripe pineapple nose; full-bodied, rich and spicy, fat, sweet fruit with a soft texture on the palate but the acidity carries it to a toasty finish. Good length. ****½
Food match: boiled lobster, spiced pork loin

Bötzingen Gewürztraminer Kabinett 2002 (Baden, Germany)
$9.95 (general list)
Not the most classic Gewürz but certainly worth the price. Pale straw in colour; aromatic, spicy nose; medium-bodied, sweetish with perfumed peach and lychee flavours, soft and fat but enough acidity to give it a decent length on the finish. ***
Food match: Thai food; light curried dishes
