Etchart Torrontes 2002 (Argentina)
$9.95
A Muscat clone that puts a lot of more expensive Alsace Muscat to shame. Medium straw colour; heady, perfumed, carnation and cardamom notes; medium-bodied, peachy, off-dry, aromatic and spicy.
Food match: light curried dishes, Thai or Mexican food

Château de Nages Cuvée Joseph Torres 2000 Red (Costières de Nîmes)
$21.55 (Vintages stores – call LCBO infoline 416-365-5900 or 1-800-361-3291 to locate stores)
This Syrah-based wine reminds me of Hermitage at half the price. Dense purple colour with a rich plum, blackberry, chocolate and dried rose petal nose; well extracted, ripe blackberry fruit, spicy and full-bodied with a dry elegance and firm structure, finishing with great acidity and soft tannins. ****½
Food match: game dishes; old cheddar

Château de Nages Cuvée Joseph Torres 2001 White (Costières de Nîmes)
$21.55 (Vintages stores – call LCBO infoline 416-365-5900 or 1-800-361-3291 to locate stores)
An unusual 100% Roussanne wine given white Burgundy treatment – fermented in new French barrels, aged 5 months, with lees stirring. Deep golden colour with a tint of lime; intense. Toasty, spicy ripe melon nose; full-bodied, lovely mouth feel with concentrated peach and quince flavours backed by racy tangerine acidity. Reminiscent of a white Hermitage. ****½
Food match: broiled lobster; glazed ham.
